Speech - Language Pathology Services
A Speech - Language Evaluation is the first step in understanding the speech-language problem and determining what services are needed to address the problem. RHSC has the most comprehensive testing in the Rochester area.
- We not only assess your primary area of concern but we also assess all aspects of communicative functioning.
- We use the latest tests and assessment tools available in the field today.
- Children are tested in a play setting to obtain optimum results.
- Parents/care-taker or significant other may either accompany the individual or watch from an observation room.
- You will leave with verbal results and recommendations. A written report goes to you, the doctor, if you wish, and to whomever else you request.
Speech - Language Therapy is often recommended to address a speech-language delay or disorder. Basic therapy options at RHSC include the following:
- Individual Speech Therapy
If the speech-language pathologist feels that the child or adult needs immediate help with specific speech problems, she will recommend a highly individualized therapy program suited specifically to that individual’s needs. - Group Speech Therapy
If the speech-language pathologist feels that the child or adult might benefit from working with other individuals with similar needs, she will recommend a group program that is still highly individualized but with the added benefit of interacting and learning with others. - Monitoring
If the speech-language pathologist feels the child or adult may not need therapy right away, she may give parents or the adult some suggestions for techniques to use at home and make a monitoring call in a few months to check progress. - Parent Counseling and Education
For children, the speech-language pathologist may feel that, with a little guidance, the parent could help the child at home. She may schedule a few one-on-one sessions with the parent or caregiver to demonstrate techniques they may try at home. A follow up call is made to check progress.
