Audiology Services For Children & Adults
Hearing Assessments identify your hearing needs and address the difficulties that hearing problems create in your day-to-day life and relationships. Staff provides same-day test results and information to help you (and your family) improve or cope with the hearing problem.
Hearing Screenings are brief and include an immediate discussion of results and recommendations. They are offered periodically at the Center, community health fairs and other community events.
Hearing Aid Consultations are appointments subsequent to an initial hearing assessment in which the clinician offers recommendations and can "demo" hearing aids to assist in hearing aid selection. This is a free offering from RHSC.
Spoken Language Processing testing is a comprehensive test battery approach based on the model developed by Dr. Larry Medwetsky (RHSC VP of Clinical Services) to determine if there are underlying processing difficulties present, and, if so, to determine the specific nature of these difficulties, and, in turn, provide individualized management recommendations.
Cochlear Implant Programming Cochlear Implant users usually schedule annual appointments for adjustments to the speech processor after the first year of use. A special computer system is used to program each electrode to fine-tuned for threshold (first hearing) and for comfortable listening levels. As each electrode is turned on, very small increases of electrical current are delivered to the hearing nerve until the patient hears a soft beep or tone. Once the softest hearing level is set, the patient listens for an increase in loudness until these beeps or tones become comfortable to hear. These steps are repeated until all electrodes are set for soft and comfortable levels. From these loudness judgments, a "hearing map" is created. The map is an individually designed set of instructions that tells each electrode how to stimulate the nerve endings in the cochlea. Cochlear Implant Programming is available to individuals in our community who wear a cochlear implant. For information about RHSC's cochlear implant programming service call Dr. Ramona Pompea at 271-0680, ext. 1868.
